This manuscript reports the analysis of a population genomic data set of the common beech tree. The authors analyse the genetic diversity of this species in relation to several geographic and climatic variables while accounting for demography. They further perform a genomic scan to detect significant outlier SNPs, as candidate loci involved in local adaptation. Finally, they conducted a simulation approach to predict the response of local populations to climate change. It is a well-conducted and comprehensive study, and the manuscript is well written. I only have minor comments:
1) l497-500, genome size and LD. I think this information should be reported earlier. In particular, since population structure analyses are notoriously sensitive to LD, it would be good to mention that only minimal linkage is expected in this dataset. Given that a reference genome is available, does the data set allow to plot LD as a function of the distance between loci to effectively assess the amount and decay of LD?
2) Genomic scan. Can the authors provide some information about the detected adaptive loci? Are they located in coding / annotated regions? Do such regions show any particular functional enrichment?
3) l545: are the authors here referring to mechanisms of genetic rescue? Maybe this could be mentioned explicitly.
