This is an interesting research study that tackles the long-standing question in evolutionary biology of how traits change over time and whether allometry is a constraining factor to evolution. I am not familiar with plant systems but morphometrics, allometry and evolution of traits are my research areas. In my own research of domesticated animals I have also observed the size increase between wild and domesticated populations through means of allometry; it’s enjoyable to learn this exists in the plant kingdom.
Overall, the study design appears solid and satisfactory to address the aims from my non-specialist background. The methodology is sound (but see requests below for explicit information). The paper is well written and the discussion supports the results. I have mostly minor recommendations to improve the paper.
The abstract could be broadened for wider readability if the general findings of allometry in evolution are mentioned. The paper has a good discussion on apparent constraints in evolution, where allometric slopes are less labile than intercepts. This has been studied in numerus studies across different organisms, and has broad readership appeal if highlighted in the abstract.
The traits measured are scattered through two paragraphs in section starting line 139. It is not clear exactly what traits are used for analysis – this section could be clearer by pointing to a table, or including a summary list in text.
Software used for the statistical analysis is not stated. I assume it is the R Statistical Environment; the software and version need to be cited and mentioned preferably at the start of the analysis section (Line 158).
Packages need to be cited and versions included at first use.
