The authors present a series of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-based dual-state emissive luminogens. Their optical properties were well characterized and demonstrated. Further use of these dyes for hydrazine sensing and biological imaging was achieved. The design of this study can shed light on future design of dual-state emissive luminogens. This work can be considered for publication in Journal of Materials Chemistry C after addressing the following minor issues:
1. Many texts are hard to identify in the Figrues 5, 7, 8, and 10. The text fonts need enlargements.
2. Tetraphenylethene is a star AIE unit to construct highly emissive organic dyes. Based on the solid-state data, the fluorescence quantum yields of these prepared DSEgens are not that high. I suggest authors providing some explanations on this according to molecular packing in the crystals.
3. In the Cytotoxicity assessment part: This description of “After a cytotoxicity study of all functionalized AIEgens on triple-negative breast cancer cell lines, we observed that among the four molecules, GBY-12 shows anticancer efficacy.” need to be carefully checked. Should GBY-12 be changed to GBY-13?
4. The incubation concentrations of dyes for bioimaging should be clearly indicated in Figure 15.
5. The mean fluorescence intensities of tested dyes in the whole images of the green channel in Figure 15 are required to replace the Figure S17.
6. One recent work of tetraphenylethene (TPE)-based AIE dyes is suggested to be included to enhance the background: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2024, DOI: 10.1021/jacs.4c07785.
7. Several grammatical errors and typos should be corrected, and the entire manuscript should be carefully checked again for accuracy of descriptions
