Thank you for the opportunity to review the manuscript titled "An Integrative Review of Specialised Nursing Career Frameworks to Develop a Nursing Career Framework for Registered Nurses Working in AgedCare". This is an important and timely paper on care for older populations. Please consider the following comments and suggestions in hopes that these are useful.
Generally, the introduction is well-written and substantiates the need for this review. The authors made a convincing case to synthesize the literature on nursing career frameworks. However, I think it would be useful if the authors can add a few statements before the purpose summarizing the state of literature reviews on the very topic. Please consider answering what types of reviews (if any) have already been conducted on nursing career frameworks. If there are none, perhaps making an argument that prior reviews have not been conducted.
The review questions are clear, the choice of integrative review is appropriate, the methods are generally well outlined. While integrative review was used, I would have chosen a scoping review approach because the intention is only to map what type of frameworks are known, what are their key features, and characteristics. But given that critical appraisal was required, the fine line between a scoping and integrative review for this review question may be tricky. However, the methods could be strengthen by a) providing brief descriptions of the components and features of critical appraisal tools so that readers can make sense of the quality described in terms of percentage scores, b) if inter-rater agreement using kappa was estimated for independent screening.
While the authors noted that they used a constant comparative analysis method for data synthesis as suggested by Whitmore and Knafl, I would disagree that constant comparative analysis method was used. The themes reported are directly based on the three review question noted on page 5 and are not inductively developed. Therefore, this type of analysis is consistent with a deductive approach used in many published integrative reviews in nursing. The following paper supports this. Please see below for your consideration
Younas, A., Shahzad, S., & Inayat, S. (2022). Data Analysis and Presentation in Integrative Reviews: A Narrative Review. Western Journal of Nursing Research, 44(12), 1124–1133. https://doi.org/10.1177/01939459211030344
Given this, please revisit your methods section and revise the data analysis process or present inductively driven themes from the reviewed studies.Once the data synthesis approach is revisited or perhaps findings are tweaked accordingly, it may change some parts of your discussion.
I hope this review is useful.
