Al Mathen et al.'s paper "Polymorphisms in MC1R and ASIP Genes are Associated with Coat Color Variation in the Arabian Camel" is indeed informative, educative, and raises both scientific as well as socio-economic related questions. The scientific part is clear and abides by the international standards to experimentation with animals and following a meticulous measurement system with adequate instrumentation. Results lead to satisfaction as the researchers were able to evidence polymorphisms as they contend, "results indicate support that the light-brown coat color is likely the ancestral coat color for the dromedary. These sequence variations at the MC1R and ASIP genes represent the first documented evidence of candidate polymorphisms associated with Mendelian traits in the dromedary." The paper does not perform a comparative analysis showing, for example, a matrix whereby the different category of eco-types Camels is matched with results. Possibly this could be useful to compare with other findings from other regions around the globe including Africa, Australia, Mongolia, etc... As for the socio-economic aspects, more research is needed to categorize camel herds [based on the findings] for their resistance to illness being raised in the wrong regions [by referring to Figure 1 in the paper].
