Biomass-derived furan compounds, including HMF and furfural (FF), offer a crucial pathway for converting renewable biomass. The electrocatalytic conversion of furan compounds is an enticing approach for transforming them into value-added chemicals. Here, the authors provide a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in the electrocatalytic of HMF and FF, focusing on mechanisms and pathways, catalysts, and factors affecting electrolyte pH, potential, and substrate concentration. Furthermore, challenges and future application prospects are discussed. The review work is comprehensive and can benefit the readers related to this field. It could be further improved by considering the following comments.
“This discussion not only serves as a theoretical foundation for the efficient electrochemical conversion of biomass derivatives but also provides valuable insights for the transition to industrial-scale production.” For industrial-scale production, the catalyst can simultaneously achieve high current densities with Faradic efficiency, which poses substantial barriers to the widespread implementation of biobased alcohol and aldehyde electrooxidation. This point is so important that I advise to add a separate section to discuss it. DOI:10.1039/D3EE04543A; doi: 10.1016/j.apcatb.2023.122590 are good references for this section. Fabricating electrodes with large areas is also vital for the industrial-scale production of electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived furan compounds.
I understand the pressure to save pages. However, the words in some figures are too small to see clearly.
The authors cited most of the critical literature; however, some newly published works still need to be included, such as doi.org/10.1002/smll.202207236; doi.org/10.1002/smll.202306663.
Is the “Recent Advances in” necessary in the title? I suggest deleting the three words.
