In the introduction of the paper, the authors describe the difference in behaviors predicted for the unwilling vs. unable condition to be characterized by more “patience” toward the unable (line 20). The primary edit that we would suggest is to elaborate on the link between the schema of “patience” and how that is supported by behavioral measures, both in previous work, as stated in the introduction, and in the hypotheses and measures of the current study. Namely, in line 70, they mention that chimpanzees produce “begging and assertive behaviors” to the unwilling rather than the unable, but it is unclear how those behaviors fall into the interpretation of patience. Also, in line 113, in discussion of the previous paper with dogs, they mention that dogs are faster to go around a barrier in the unable condition, which seems to be the opposite of “patience”, and the authors should discuss this inconsistency in their interpretation.

In lines 131-136, the authors lay out predictions for each measured study 1, but again, they could make the link between these behaviors and “patience” could be clarified, and also how “patience” relates to understanding intentions.

In the discussion as well, the authors should discuss how the specific behaviors they measured relate to their overarching interpretation and prediction of more “patience”, or else come up with a smoother interpretation of the behavioral suite, specifically in reference to the findings about lying down, which could be interpreted either way.

78 - End of sentence could be worded more smoothly
289 - should say “additionally” rather than besides (true throughout manuscript)
521 - should be capuchin monkeys, missing plural
424 - missing the word “and” between “behind” and “told”
