This commentary provides an update on the work undertaken within the Metabolomics Society in the development of standards for reporting the annotation and identification of metabolites. This work is key to the sharing and integration of metabolomics data between laboratories.
The commentary is well-written, contains nothing controversial, and it covers my questions, e.g. who they are working with in the community, what they are doing in the future, etc. It is also pleasing to note that the authors of the commentary include representatives of Metabolights since it can positively influence laboratories to adopt the reporting standards if the database is also compliant with the standards.
Level of interest: An article of importance in its field
Quality of written English: Acceptable
Declaration of competing interests: I would like to declare that I collaborate on a software development project with two of the authors (MRV and WD) of this commentary and that I also work for GigaScience. However, I do not stand to gain, financially or otherwise, from the specific publication of this commentary.
