I am excited and encouraged by the excellent example provided by Bulla et al. in regards to big collaborations with big data, clear transparency about every analytical step, and completely reproducible results. These points become all the more important in today's day and age of public mistrust of scientific research. Furthermore, as a fellow shorebird-enthusiast, it was wonderful to see so many great people in our community getting together on this project and making this happen.
Furthermore, I was amazed to see that there is such a strong phylogenetic signal underlying the patterns shown by Bulla et al. The clear distinction in the periodicity patterns between the Scolopaci and Charadrii groups really gets me curious! Also, I was excited to see that sympatric species breeding in the same regions appear to have substantial variation even though they are exposed to the same predation and climate pressures (at least at a macro level). This is similar to the sex-role incubation rhythms that I observe in the Charadrius spp. I study in Madagascar. I look forward to utilizing the scripts provided by Bulla et al. to explore my own data in the light of their exciting findings!
