I thought this was a really nice, interesting study and it is great to see studies coming from different geographical regions compared to the typical colic related epidemiological studies. Overall nicely written and I only have a few comments to make.
Abstract
Lines 11-12 – I think this could be clearer, I had to re-read a couple of times as ‘choose consent’ was a bit unclear. Suggest something like ‘18.7% would consent to EL, 55.2% would consider EL and 26.1% would not consent to EL being performed on their horse’ (actually, this is v similar to what you have put in lines 162-164)
Materials & Methods
Lines 66-67 duplicated line, not necessary here (no model built yet)
Results
The results section is quite short – which is fine as the reader can look at the tables. But I think it would be worth stating factors around percentage with insurance cover here. It might also be worth putting in current exchange rates re pound and dollar so readers who might be more familiar with these currencies can make a comparison rather than having to look up exchange rates.
Line 80 – This sentence is a bit confusing – reword. Suggest something like ‘Relatively few respondents stated that they would consent to EL regardless of horse related factors….’
Line 84 – pleural for data ‘are’
Line 96 – convalescence
Discussion
Again , this is quite short which is not a major issue but some areas are not really discussed re. model findings e.g. location, age. What are the specific educational interventions needed rather than just stating ‘educating clients regarding colic surgery’?
Line 139 – non significant results should not be discussed as if they were significant
Line 145 – had insurance or had insurance cover (for colic)
Figure 1 – wording incomplete for the legend for the column on the right hand side, Figure 3, spacing at the bottom overlaps
Table 2 – I would prefer to have the reference category for the categorical variables shown. What does the * signify? (and same for Table 3)
