Comments on abstract, title, references

The manuscript is titled :Flood hazard assessment for extreme flood events. It analyzes the problem of floods during extreme floods in the case the 2010 Kostanjevica na Krki extreme river flood and the 2007 Zelezniki flash flood located in slovenia. The references used are referenced correctly , recents and relevants.

Comments on introduction/background

  • The authors introduce the topic of flooding. They present adequate literature review. The introduction is clear, concise and effective. The Introduction section describes the purpose of the paper. It presents statement of the research objectives, and hypotheses of Flood hazard assessment.

  • The Introduction section contains four sub-sections: 1- description of the study area, 2- the numerical model used 3- literature review of Flood hazard assessment methods and 4-Empirically derived method. In sub section (2) the abbreviation (DIVAST-TVD)) (Depth Integrated Velocities and Solute Transport total variation diminishing) was not mentioned.

Comments on methodology

-This section is clear. The authors justified the method used by subsequent researches. Also, variables defined and measured are appropriately. The study methods are valid. The method is well detailed to reproduce the study a second time.

Comments on data and results

The authors preferred to group the two sections results and discussion in one section. This section contains 10 figures and one table. The figures are well illustrated and the table and well explained.

The authors used well appropriate units, rounding, and number of decimals.

Titles, columns, and rows are labeled correctly and clearly.

The manuscript presents the results in a proper way.

  • Are you clear about what is a statistically significant result?
  • Yes

  • Are you clear about what is a practically meaningful result? -Yes.

Comments on discussion and conclusions

The results in this manuscript are discussed and interpreted from multiple angles. The conclusions answer the aims of the study and it is supported by results and references. The limitations of the study constitute the opportunities to future research.

This study design is appropriate to answer the aim set by the authors. This manuscript adds a new know on the topic of flooding. In my opinion, it doesn't show flaws. It is consistent within itself.

Overall statement or summary of the article and its findings in your own words.

This manuscript studies the problem of floods during extreme floods in the case the 2010 Kostanjevica na Krki extreme river flood and the 2007 Zelezniki flash flood located in slovenia. This paper examines the methods that should be used to assess the risk of flooding for people exposed to risk of extreme floods. The authors used two different flood hazard assessment methods : (1) Empirically derived method and (2) Physically based and experimentally calibrated method. The results obtained showed that in areas prone to extreme flooding, the flood hazard indices should be predicted based on methods derived from a mechanics-based analysis, such as the physically based and experimentally calibrated method. The results found constitute the theoretical background for the future studies.

Overall strengths of the article and what impact it might have in your field.

  • This manuscript is an addition to my knowledge of flood hazard risk in a short time period.

Specific comments on weaknesses of the article and what could be done to improve it.

  • I think this manuscript could be a good reference for future work.
