Abstract

As the major implementation of the affordable Care Act of 2010 becomes reality in 2014, demands placed on mental health providers to utilize evidence-based treatments (EBTs) with clients has become a more relevant issue for practitioners. Little is known about the factors that affect Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) from implementing EBTs. To fill the gap in understanding these therapists' attitudes toward effective change and implementation of EBTs is the goal of the study. MFT attitudes toward adopting EBTs and their readiness for change in their treatment practices are examined. Participants were 137 Licensed MFTs providing mental health services in the state of California. T -tests, correlation analyses and multiple regressions, illustrated that gender, education, previous study of EBTs, and utilization of previous training were associated with more positive attitudes toward adoption of EBT. Mental health organizations and policy makers may benefit from consideration of how an MFT's training is associated with their attitude toward change in practice.
