Abstract

In chapter one, the project director introduces the main objective of developing a new member’s class for First Baptist Church of Lake St. Louis. The chapter also defines each personal and professional objective. The project director also explains the rationale behind the project idea in the first chapter. The project director also defines several key terms for the reader to understand. In chapter two the project director describes the biblical and theological foundation for the project. The project director broke this down into four specific areas: biblical accountability, biblical discipline, biblical use of gifts, and the advance of God’s mission. For each area, the project director exegeted scripture that developed the idea. For biblical accountability, he exegeted Heb 13:17 and 1 Thess 5:12–13, for biblical discipline Matt 18:15–18, for biblical use of gifts 1 Cor 12:21–26, and the advance of God’s mission Acts 2:42–47 and Matt 28:18–20. In chapter three, the project director developed the teaching plan for the new member’s class. He discussed the meaning of biblical church membership and why it matters. He also walked through the history of church membership by studying Patristic era, Medieval era, Reformation era, and Modern era. The project director reviewed other church’s new member class materials and spoke with pastors at three different churches in regard to their new member process. The teaching plan became the curriculum applied by FBC to lead people into meaningful membership. The curriculum included a booklet for each participant, a copy of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, surveys, interactive discussions, information about the church, and direct steps to becoming an active meaningful member within the church. The result of chapter three was the development of the teaching plan for the new member’s class for First Baptist Church. In chapter four, the project director defined the detailed process of the project in narrative format. The project director used the strategy planning model for the project. This chapter provides the necessary details for someone to reproduce the project. In chapter five, the project director analyzed the results of the project. He evaluated the professional and personal objectives as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the project. He also identifies lessons the project director learned while reflecting on the overall project. In Appendix A, the project director provides a brief history of First Baptist Church of Lake St. Louis. In Appendix B are copies of the Annual Church Profiles for First Baptist Church of Lake St. Louis. Appendix C is a copy of the weekly bulletin from the morning worship service. In Appendix D, the project director provided a copy of the final teaching plan for the new member’s class. Appendix E contains the pre-class survey, and Appendix F contains the post-class survey. The results from the surveys are contained in Appendix G and H.
