Abstract

This paper addresses the main issues, challenges and prospects related to the Brazilian power sector giving useful insights and bringing some light on how these changes might affect the future of the electricity system. The new tariff schemes proposed by ANEEL, e.g., Tariff Flag System (TFS), White Hourly Tariff (WHT) and the electricity prepayment are expected to reduce peak demand, postpone future investments and foster the potential of Demand Response (DR). Our findings also suggest that the smart metering evolution in the country will depend on the first consumers' adoption, likewise the WHT scheme. The outcomes of this study also reveal the existence of a significant gap between the current levels of Demand Side Management (DSM) strategies and the overall potential available in the country.
