  • A. General comments:

    The authors’ work put forward in the paper is of significant value for publication. The synthetic chemistry is interesting and the authors have provided a thorough discussion of the findings. Recommend publication with some minor revisions noted below.

    B. Strengths and weaknesses:

    1. Strengths: solid synthetic work and cytotoxicity studies conducted.

    2. Weaknesses:

    a. All synthesized molecules must be characterized fully. Several molecules do not have 13C NMR data provided.

    b. The manuscript’s readability suffers due to substantial grammatical, spelling, word usage errors and incorrect punctuation. These issues are throughout the entire manuscript. I am including an edited manuscript (suggested corrected parts are highlighted in yellow) that addresses many of these issues to make the manuscript close to publication-ready.

    c. Figure, Table and Schema formatting not in accord with AJOC standards. I have provided corrections in the suggested corrected manuscript.

    C. Suggestions for improvement:

    1. Provide 13C NMR data in the experimental section for all molecules prepared which do not presently contain this data.

    2. That the authors adopt the recommended changes indicated in the edited manuscript and resubmit a revised version that includes these changes and the 13C NMR data.

  • A. General comments:

    The authors have conducted and related an interesting body of work in this paper. All compounds are characterized in detail, the discussion is thoughtful and informative and graphics provided are clear and appropriate for this work. With inclusion of the very minor additions recommended below, the manuscript is acceptable for publication.

    B. Strengths and weaknesses:

    1. Strengths: Elegantly explained synthetic work. Thorough discussion of the findings make following the work easy. Characterization of the cation product is very compelling.

    2. Weakness: The DFT calculations have no citation afforded to explain the program parameters. The authors have not indicated availability of supplemental materials for the DFT output files.

    C. Suggestions for improvement:

    1. Include a citation for the DFT calculations in the body of the manuscript where the DFT calculations are discussed.

    2. Include a statement immediately before Acknowledgments to the effect: Supplemental material available: Output files for the DFT computations are available from the author upon request. (supply contact information)

    3. Authors should be prepared to deliver output files upon request.
