Hugo Proença, SMIEEE, B.Sc. (2001), M.Sc. (2004) and Ph.D. (2007) is an Associate Professor at University of Beira Interior and has been researching mainly about biometrics and visual-surveillance. He is the coordinating editor of the IEEE Biometrics Council Newsletter and the area editor (ocular biometrics) of the IEEE Biometrics Compendium Journal. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Biometrics and served as Guest Editor of special issues of the Pattern Recognition Letters, Image and Vision Computing and Signal, Image and Video processing Journals.
Main research interests target the actions of sex steroid hormones in male reproduction and carcinogenesis. Experimental approaches use cell lines, animal models and/or human samples involving genomic, transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis. Current research is focused on: i) androgens/estrogens actions controlling apoptosis, cell metabolism and calcium homeostasis; ii) the molecular mechanisms underpinning infertility and carcinogenesis associated with metabolic and hormonal disorders; iii) the development of innovative biomarkers and therapeutic options for management and treatment of hormone-dependent cancers.

He was also Teaching Assistant and Assistant Professor at the IST - Instituto Superior Técnico, Coordinator of the Center for Technical Support and Training of the IST Computer Centre, responsible for the Information Technology Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department of IST, Vice President and President of the IST Computer Centre and Chief Executive Officer of the Group of Informatics of the Technical University of Lisbon. He supervised 70 research students, including 17 fellowships (1 post-doctoral, 5 PhD and 2 science and technology management), 7 internships, 18 final-year projects and 2 undergraduate seminars, 1 program of scientific aptitude and teaching skills, 14 master dissertations and 11 doctoral thesis. He authored more than 250 publications, including 42 articles in books or journals, 148 in international conferences, 14 educational monographs, 6 teaching texts and 6 books. He received a Visiting Fellowship (1984-87), issued by the British Ministry of Defence, as well as a Window on Science Grant, awarded by the US Air Force. He is a member specialist in Aeronautical Engineering from the OE-Chartered Engineers Organization, SAE-American member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and Associate Fellow of AIAA-American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and was reviewer of American design CPSRS, Category 6 (Structures / Mechanical Systems , Fluid, Thermal, Propulsion, Aerodynamics) Subcommittee: Fluids (1998-2001) and several international journals and conferences, Associate Editor for Europe of the Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Editor of Atomization and Sprays and Managing Guest Editor of Fuel Processing Technology. He was also Director General of the Centre for Science and Higher Education, Director General of Department of Assessment, Forecasting and Planning of the Ministry of Education, Member of the Portuguese National Statistical Council, member of the Coordinating Council for the Information Society of the Ministry of Information Education, member of the Unit of the Education Operational Intervention Management, representative of Portugal in various groups and projects of the European Union and OECD (National European Network Coordinator Information Eurydice, National representative for the INES Project of Statistical Indicators of Education and representative of Portugal in the Standing Group on Benchmarks and Indicators of the European Union), member of the Technical Support Group to participate in the Thematic Areas of the 7th Framework Programme (Item 7 of the Specific Programme Cooperation: Transport, including Aeronautics) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher education, elected Delegate of OE of the Castelo Branco District, and proposer and member of the Executive Committee of the Specialization in Aeronautical Engineering OE.
Pedro Dinis Gaspar has a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal. He is a Professor in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal. He is an integrated researcher at the R&D Centre for Mechanics and Aerospace Science and Technologies (CMAST) and a collaborator researcher at the ALLab - Assisted Living Computing and Telecommunications Laboratory, Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). He has supervised several Ph.D. Thesis and M.Sc. dissertations. He is the Coordinator of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Beira Interior. He is also the pedagogical coordinator of several Vocational Education and Training (VET) promoted by AFTEBI. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 papers in refereed book chapters, journals, and conferences, and submitted two patents. He has been involved in the organization of several national and international events (member of the organizing committee or organizing chairman) such as conferences, congresses and workshops. He has served as a TPC member and reviewer for a number of international conferences and peer-review international journals. He has been chairman for a number of international conferences. He is member of the editorial board of several international journals. Also, he has participated/coordinated several national (FCT and other funding sources) and international research projects (EU and other regions) as well as in R&D&I contracts with industry. He has been the global coordinator of the consortium of several partner projects to analyse the occupational health and safety, energy efficiency and production management as well as the training needs in the agro-food industry.
