I'm interested in certain characteristics of insect societies, particularly reproductive division of labour and defences against pathogens. I'm studying worker reproduction in order to understand the evolution of the sterile worker caste, mainly using honeybees as a model system. Furthermore, I'm interested in the genetic basis of disease resistance, the plasticity in the activation of immune responses and the evolutionary forces driving immune gene evolution at the molecular level. We are also studying social context dependent gene expression changes in social insects with particular emphasis on bumblebees.
