About Université Laval

Laval University (French: Université Laval) is the oldest centre of education in Canada (2nd oldest in North America), and was the first institution in North America to offer higher education in French. Its main campus is located on the outskirts of the historic city in Quebec City, the capital of the province of Quebec. The university is ranked among the top ten Canadian universities in terms of research funding.

    Denis Roy, PhD, is full professor with the Department of Food Science at Laval University (Quebec, Canada) and researcher at the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods and Op+Lait. His work aims to deepen the advanced knowledge on bacterial cultures and prebiotics that may enter into production of functional foods, to understand their activities, and to study their properties and alleged effects on health as well as interactions with gut microbiota.

    Sylvain Bourgoin

    Dr. Bourgoin graduated from the University Paris XI, France with a Ph.D. in Life Sciences in 1987. He completed post-doctoral studies in Lipid Mediators, Signaling, and Cell Biology at the Rheumatology & Immunology Research Center in Québec city, and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Bourgoin has been a member of the Canadian Arthritis Network since 1997, and a member of the Inflammatory Research Association since 1993. He was a member of the Immunology panel, Grant Review Committee of the Arthritis Society of Canada from 2000 – 2002 and of several CIHR peer review panels.

    In addition, he has received several research awards from The Arthritis Society; Dr. Bourgoin was a Post-doctoral Fellow from 1988 to 1992, a Senior Research Scholar 1996 to 1999, and a Research Scientist from 1999 – 2004.

    Dr. Bourgoin is a Full Professor at Laval University, in the Department of Microbiology, Infectious diseases & Microbiology since 1992. He has published more than 100 research papers in career. Dr. Bourgoin is currently researching a number of projects, including:

    • Investigating the expression of lysophosphatidic acid and sphingosine-1-phosphate receptors by fibroblast-like synoviocytes and determine the contribution of lysophosphatidic acid sphingosine-1-phosphate in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). • The regulation of neutrophil functions by cytohesins
