How we calculate the winners

 

Sentinel Award

The recipient of the Sentinel Award is determined by a panel of judges from across the scholarly publishing industry who nominate and shortlist candidates for consideration of the award. The judges then deliberate and determine the final winner.

In future years, we will consider taking applications and nominations for the award.


Top 1% in each field

The top 1% of reviewers in each of the 26 All Science Journal Classification (ASJC) research fields. Rankings are calculated by number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. As with all field-based categories, reviews are attributed to a research field based on the ASJC fields assigned to the journal the review was performed for.


Most reviews rated as 'excellent'

The top 10 reviewers on Publons ranked by the number of reviews rated as 'excellent' by the handling editor for pre-publications reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. Our excellent review rating scheme takes into consideration: clarity, thoroughness, helpfulness and timeliness. Top reviewers for top journals

First we identify the top 30 journals on Publons, by number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. For each of these journals, we then determine the 10 reviewers that have performed the most verified pre-publication reviews in that timeframe.


Top reviewing institutions

Research institutions are ranked based on the number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017.


Top reviewing institutions in each field

As above, but broken down by each of the 26 root All Science Journal Classification (ASJC) research fields. We calculate the number of reviews in each research field, as determined by the ASJC fields of the review's journal, performed by researchers from each university.

Top reviewers for each institution are calculated based on the number of reviews they have performed in their institutions' winning field(s).


Top reviewing countries

Countries are ranked based on the number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017 in each of the 26 ASJC research fields.


Top post-publication reviewers

Reviewers who have added the most post-publication reviews for published research to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. Post-publication reviews must be more than 250 words and comply with Publons reviewing and commenting guidelines.

Writing post-publication reviews is critical for continuing the process of evaluating, understanding and improving research after publication.


Top handling editors

Calculated by number of verified editorial records added to Publons between 1 October 2016 and 1 September 2017. Each editorial record represents a manuscript for which the editor managed the peer review process before an editorial decision was made.
