Publons' Peer Review Awards are back for 2018 to honor the world’s top peer reviewers! For the third year running, our Awards celebrate the #SentinelsofScience and research: reviewers who have gone above and beyond in determining what quality, rigour, and innovation look like in their field. Discover our categories, and the methodology we use to determine the winners, below.
Methodology and Eligibility
All researchers with a Publons profile were automatically eligible for any of the four Peer Review Awards listed below:
Top 1% in each field
The top 1% of reviewers in each of the 22 Essential Science Indicators (ESI) research fields. Rankings are calculated by number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2018. Reviews were attributed to a ESI field based on the journal the review was performed for. We added a 23rd field, "Assorted", to celebrate reviewers whose contributions were for the small amount of journals on Publons could not be directly matched to an ESI field.
We used the ESI field categorisation because these are broad research areas that align with the Web of Science -- the most trusted citation index for scientific and scholarly research.
Top quality reviewers
The top 10 reviewers on Publons ranked by the number of reviews rated as 'excellent' by the handling editor or author for pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2018. Our excellent review rating scheme takes into consideration: clarity, thoroughness, helpfulness and timeliness. You can read more about it on our blog here (editor-generated evaluations) and here (author-generated evaluations), and in our FAQs.
Top reviewers for top journals
First we identify the top 30 journals on Publons, by number of verified pre-publication reviews performed and added to Publons between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2018. For each of these journals, we then determine the 10 reviewers that have performed the most verified pre-publication reviews in that timeframe.
Top handling editors
The top 10 handing editors calculated by number of verified editorial records added to Publons between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2018. Each editorial record represents a manuscript for which the editor managed the peer review process before an editorial decision was made.
Early Career Researchers Reviewers' Choice Award
This was the first year we ran the peer-nominated and voted award, designed to recognize an individual who has been influential in the realm of peer review, or has significantly contributed to improving the system. No self-nominations were accepted during the nominations period and our definition of an early-career researcher was: less than five years since a PhD or MD qualification - or equivalent.
Award nominations closed on 1 August, 2018; Publons staff reviewed all submissions. Together with Publons' staff, Managing Director Andrew Preston selected the top six reviewers put forward for the Award. The peer review community voted for the researcher most deserving of the award. The ultimate winner was hand-picked by our judging panel, including Andrew Preston, Annette Thomas (CEO, Scientific and Academic Research) and Jonathan Adams (Director, Institute for Scientific Information) at Clarivate Analytics. Their decision was largely focused on the community votes, as well as the nominees’ overall contribution to the peer review system.
