At Publons, peer review is at the heart of what we do.
We believe that peer review is one of the pillars of academic publishing and a key component of scientific research in general. An expert reviewer contributes a great deal to a manuscript, often improving reproducibility and providing important context to a publication.
However, in most cases reviews are discarded as soon as a paper is published and reviewers receive little to no credit for their contributions.
Our mission is to fix peer review turning it into a research activity that is just as rewarding as publishing an article itself. We do this in three ways:
- First, we partner with journals to curate and index just about any kind of review onto Publons.com. This helps to turn review into a searchable body of knowledge that can be referred to when reading the literature.
- Second, we help researchers to build a verified record of their reviews. This record spans publishers and can be referenced as an official research output.
- Finally, this review index also doubles as a method for journals to prove the quality of their peer review and stand above predatory publishers.
So far we've had great success on our mission to speed up science. We've added more than four thousand reviews for nearly two thousand reviewers and have announced official partnerships with two cutting edge journals in PeerJ and GigaScience.
Inaugural reviewer rewards
Building your resume is important, but today we're announcing something a little fun.
Our expert reviewers are also performing exciting research, so we've been working hard behind the scenes to put together a rewards program that enables them to do more of that. Starting now, and from every quarter onward, we're pleased to announce that we'll be awarding our top reviewers with a series of benefits from some of our favourite scientific services.
Recipients of the prize will be able to start with the Altmetric Explorer to find and analyse trends in your field, crowdfund your research on Experiment.com, order experiments from the world's best labs on Science Exchange, collaborate with your team on Mendeley and Github, crunch the data in the cloud on Amazon Web Services, and publish with PeerJ. On top of that, you'll be able to do it in style with t-shirts and gear from GigaScience and Publons.
