I am currently a Reader in Environmental and Molecular Microbiology in the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, at Abertay University, Dundee, UK.
My research focusses on aspects of bacterial adaptation, and my group continues to investigate biofilm-formation by environmental pseudomonads following an earlier involvement with the Wrinkly Spreader mutants isolated from P. fluorescens SBW25 populations diversifying in static microcosms. We are also interested in biosurfactant production by pseudomonads and are currently investigating how these compounds might be used in biotechnology.
I was originally educated in New Zealand, undertaking my BSc, MSc (Hons) and PhD degrees at Auckland University. I undertook two postdoctoral positions at Oxford University before becoming a University Research lecturer, and then taking up my Readership at Abertay University in 2007. I am actively engaged in research and research leadership as the University's Environment Theme Leader, and I undertake teaching for our Biomedical Sciences, Environmental and Forensic programmes, and have recently been awarded a Senior Fellowship in the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
