Niamh M. Brennan


A first class honours, first place in class, Science (Microbiology & Biochemistry) graduate of University College Dublin, Prof Niamh Brennan qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG, holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and is a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors (London). She is an Inaugural Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Directors in Ireland and is an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland.

Niamh has published on Financial Reporting, Corporate Governance, Forensic Accounting and Clinical Governance. With 100+ publications, she has a h-index of 25 reflecting 3,500+ Google Scholar citations. One of her papers received the 2010 British Accounting Review Best Paper Award; another Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal's (AAAJ) Mary Parker Follett Best Paper Manuscript Award 2011; another a Mary Parker Follett 'highly commended' manuscript award 2014; Two of her papers are among AAAJ's 24 outstanding articles of the last 25 years; while her article, "Can Directors Rely on Experts?", received the 2011 Accountancy Ireland Award. In a survey of alumni, Niamh was voted one of UCD's top three lecturers for the 2000s onwards. She has served as Chair of the Accounting group and Associate Dean for Research at the UCD School of Business. Niamh has also held visiting positions at the University of Sydney, the University of South Australia, the University of Canterbury at Christchurch, New Zealand, the University of Otago, New Zealand, Queensland University of Technology, the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne and RMIT University, Melbourne.

Having established the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance in 2002, Niamh plays a leading role in the public discourse in Ireland and internationally on corporate governance. The Centre has provided executive and professional training to thousands of Irish company directors.

Niamh holds/has held non-executive directorships with the Childrens' Hospital Group, the National College of Art & Design, Drinkaware, the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, the Health Service Executive, Ulster Bank, Co-operation Ireland, Coillte (Irish state forestry company) and Lifetime Assurance (Bank of Ireland's life assurance arm).

She is a regular TV, radio and newspaper contributor.
