Luigia Sabbatini was born in Bari on October 1950. Degree in Chemistry in 1974. Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Faculty of Science of University of Bari since 1986. Author of about 160 research papers published in international journals, of books and chapters of books. Invited speaker at various National and International Conferences.
-In the past member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena and Annali di Chimica. At present is in the Advisory Board of the journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (Springer) and is Associate Editor of the journal Vacuum (Elsevier). -President of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society(1998-2000) -President of the Regional Section of Italian Chemical Society (2005-2007) -Member of the Senatus Academicus of the University of Bari(1997-2002). -President of the Interdipartimental Center of Research and Services in the field of Spectroscopy, University of Bari (2005-2010) -Head of Chemistry Department, University of Bari (2005-2010) -National coordinator of a project financed by CNR within the program "Agenzia 2000". -National coordinator of a project financed by MIUR Prin05 "Development of reliable guidelines in the chemical characterization of works of art; case study: Vesuvian area (Hercolaneum and Pompeii)" -Scientific Coordinator of a Research Unit within the frame of "Progetto Finalizzato sui Beni Culturali"on the modified materials. -Scientific Coordinator of the Project "Research Laboratory for the Diagnostics of Cultural Heritage" financed (euro 1.900.000) within the frame of PON 2000-2006 - Avviso N.68 - (Instrumentations). This biennial project (February 2003 - February 2005) made possible the acquisition of big instruments of great importance for the diagnostics of Cultural Heritage. -Guest Editor of special issues of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry Journal devoted to investigations on the development and characterization of interfaces of biological/analytical chemistry interest(2005, 2012)
Her field of expertise is focused on the development of innovative methods, mainly based on surface spectroscopy and in particular X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), for the analysis and characterization of materials and interface of interest in technologically adavanced applications. In particular her scientific production covers: -development and characterization of nanostructured hybrids and composite materials -synthesis and performance evaluation of functionalised coatings for biomedical application, sensors, food packaging -determination of chemical composition of materials of interest in Cultural Heritage (organic material in paintings, pigments in mosaics tesserae, coatings and decorations on ancient pottery, etc.)
Of particular interest is the pulse given to the utilization of surface chemical derivatization techniques for the assessment of the presence of strategically important chemical functionalities
Great attention has been devoted to the investigation on the structure/property relation and on the interactions between molecule/material surface which play a key-role both in the understanding of adhesion mechanism and coatings degradation and in the design and synthesis of materials at high technological content (polymers for controlled drugs release, thin film for sensors based on molecular recognition, etc.).
