Nicholaos Jones

Since 2007, I work in the Philosophy Department at University of Alabama in Huntsville. I hail from a former coal mining town in Western Pennsylvania and the east side of Baltimore.

One part of my current research focuses on the ways in which network diagrams amplify cognition in explanation, model construction, hypothesis generation, and other practices from systems biology. Another part focuses on explicating the metaphysical aspects of Huayan Buddhism as developed in the 7th century by Fazang. Perhaps the central issue unifying these projects stems from our finitude: how can we frame our lives inquiring about nature and dealing with dissatisfaction given that the tools we have to work with are unavoidably limited? This issue also informs my past work about the role of idealizations in scientific explanation and confirmation, as well as an attempt to design a support tool for ethical decision-making.
