Liang Yang

Bio

My research is dedicated to bacterial pathogenesis, biofilm physiology, interspecies interactions, and microbial evolution. Using molecular biology, microbiology, computer modeling and systems biology approaches (transcriptomics, proteomics, phenotypic arrays), I’m trying to explore the following topics, i) bacterial stress response and tolerance to treatments by antimicrobial agents, ii) role of extracellular polymeric substances and bacterial intercellular communication during mono-species and multi-species biofilm development, iii) bacterial evolution and adaptation during chronic infections. I am also interested in development of novel anti-pathogenesis drugs as alternatives to the conventional antibiotics to combat the multidrug resistant pathogen. High-throughput cell-based assays in combination with computer-based modeling approaches (such as QSAR, molecular docking/scoring functions) are employed for this purpose.
