Lori L. Burrows

Bio

Lori Burrows, PhD, is Professor and Associate Chair, Research, of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, and a member of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Diseases Research, McMaster University. She was a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator, and the recipient of the Elsie Winifred Crann Award (U. of Toronto) and George Armstrong-Peters Prize (U. of Toronto), both awarded to highly productive young investigators. Dr. Burrows is the Chair of the CIHR Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Peer Review panel (since 2010) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bacteriology. She has served as a consultant and research partner to a number of medical device companies focused on biomaterials development.

Dr. Burrows’ research interests include the biosynthesis and function of unique bacterial cell surface structures involved in pathogenesis that can be targeted for disruption. Her laboratory is a world leader in studies of bacterial adhesins called type IV pili (T4P) that allow pathogens to interact with their host, spread across surfaces and to form antibiotic tolerant biofilms. They are defining the T4P assembly pathway, using molecular, biochemical and structural approaches, and using chemical biology techniques to identify inhibitors. The Burrows lab has a strong interest in the intersection of T4P assembly system construction and its coordination with bacterial cell division, and studies peptidoglycan metabolism in the model antibiotic-resistant pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A third area of interest is biofilm formation and control on industrial and medically relevant surfaces.
