Academic Background. I obtained the degrees of Doctor in Medical Sciences from the National University of Mexico (UNAM), (1998); Master in Medical Sciences with an emphasis in Infectious Diseases by UNAM (1986); Field Epidemiology Training by the Secretariat of Health of Mexico (SSA)/Centers of Disease Control and Prevention of the USA (1988); Fellowship in Infectious Diseases by the National Institute of Nutrition (1983); Fellowship in Internal Medicine (UNAM/ National Institute of Nutrition (1981) and Medical Doctor by the Faculty of Medicine/UNAM (1978).

Institutional Positions: My experience as clinician includes the completion of the fellowships of Internal Medicine (1979-1982), Infectious Diseases (1983-1984) and Applied Epidemiology (1984-1985) at the National Institute of Nutrition/National Autonomous University/Secretariat of Health/CDC. I was Head of the Department of Research and Education at the General Hospital of Rio Blanco, Veracruz, Mexico (1985-1986), and specialist in Infectious Diseases at the National Concentration Hospital. Pemex, Mexico City (1986-1987).

Afterwards I dedicated myself to public health, especially epidemiological surveillance and coordination of laboratory networks as Deputy Director of Epidemiological Research (1987-1990) and Deputy Director (1990-1995) at the National Institute of Diagnosis and Reference at the Secretariat of Health of Mexico being involved in control programs of several infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, cholera, and tuberculosis.

I have been interested in research in infectious diseases particularly tuberculosis and nosocomial diseases acting as Director of the Tuberculosis Unit (1995-2000), and Deputy Director of Innovation in Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases (2013-present), National Institute of Public Health. I was responsible for several research projects in tuberculosis including the participation of my group in the Grand Challenges in Global Health #11 “Drugs for Treatment of Latent Tuberculosis” (PI Dr. Douglas Young). My research interests include the study of the epidemiology of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, influenza, HIV/AIDS, nosocomial infections and ethical aspects of research. I have published more than 100 research articles, four books, 38 book chapters. In December 2017, the Scopus index documented more than 3000 citations to my publications.

I have been involved in teaching activities as Deputy Director of the Academic Secretariat (1995-2000) and professor of several courses at postgraduate level and direction of more than 15 Masters and Doctoral theses at the National Institute of Public Health since 1995 to present.

Awards, Honors and Memberships: I graduated with honors from the National Autonomous University in 1978; I was member of the International AIDS Society (1987-2000), the Mexican Society of Public (1987-present), the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (1997-present), the Mexican Academy of Medicine (2001 to present) and the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2002 to present). I was Head of the Institutional Review Board (2000-2006) and was a member of the Academic Research Commission (2007-2013) of INSP. I am presently a member of the National System of Researchers III and research professor F (both highest levels) at the National Institute of Public Health. My group has received more than 20 national awards. I was named International Research Scholar from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that is awarded to scientists from outside the United States who are making significant contributions to understanding basic biological processes or disease mechanisms (2000-2005).

Advisorships I served as an advisor for the Working Group for Clinical Care of the National Plan of Preparation and Response to the Influenza Pandemic of the Secretariat of Health, the National Survey of Tuberculosis Drug Resistance of the Secretariat of Health, the Mexican section of the Committee Stop TB.
